Thousands attend funeral of Palestinian who died from gunshot wounds

Thousands of Palestinians on Friday marched in the funeral of Mahmoud Said Ulayyan Al refai , 20, who died after he was shot in the head during clashes in the al-Bireh area of the Ramallah district.

Mourners gathered at a mosque in the village of Anata northeast of Jerusalem before heading to the village cemetery to lay Elayyan to rest, locals said.

A spokesperson of the Fatah movement, Thaer Fasfous, said that Ulayyan was given a military funeral. Participants raised Palestinian flags and chanted slogans in support of Palestinians who have been killed by Israel.

Fasfous added that clashes erupted at the entrance of Anata following the march.Ulayyan, a nursing student, was one of 88 Palestinians to be killed since the start of last month. He sustained severe injuries during a Nov. 11 demonstration marking the anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Israeli forces shot and injured more than 70 Palestinian youths with live fire and rubber-coated steel bullets in al-Bireh during the clashes, including Ulayyan.

Two United Nations Special Rapporteurs earlier this week “expressed grave concern” over the “excessive use of force” by Israeli forces against Palestinians.

The international body has made repeated calls on Israel to alter policies that violate Palestinian rights, raise tensions in the area, and result in unnecessary deaths.
